Okuwa Hydraulic Power Plant(大桑発電所)

Exploring Points

Okuwa Hydraulic Power Plant started its operation in 1921. Just like the Suhara Hydraulic Power Plant, it is a historical monument of modern power development in the Kiso River basin, and it is still in service.

Water from the drain outlet of Suhara Hydraulic Power Plant flows to Okuwa Hydraulic Power Plant adding water from the Kiso River at the Okuwa Power Plant Intake Weir based on electric power demand. The weir is located just downstream of Suhara Power Plant.

Water from outlet of Suhara hydraulic power plant and from the Kiso River join at the intake gate of the weir.

At the middle of the waterway near Kiso Hydraulic Power Plant, a settling basin has been installed in order to remove sands from water. The settling basin has been made wider and deeper than the headrace to make water flow slow enough to give sufficient time for sands to sink.

Water flows through a tunnel in mountains and comes out to a open headrace.

Water runs down through three water pipes and drains to the Kiso River. The drain gate of the power plant is hardly found since it is almost under water.

Beside the power plant, you find a big water drain It is the water drain of Kiso Hydraulic Power Plant, not of Okuwa Hydraulic Power Plant.
